Of course, Amos Tamm knew exactly what "not peaceful" meant as spoken by Tonks.
Most of the employees of the British Ministry of Magic are from Hogwarts, and these wizards retained the good traditions they had while studying there after graduation. Any secret they knew, they would tell everyone they knew, so it was no wonder that the fact that Sirius Black had escaped prison to hunt down Harry was not reported in the Prophet's Daily Prophet. Basically, anyone with some connection to the Ministry of Magic already knew this.
Mr. Weasley obviously found out in advance about Mr. Fudge's commissioning him to look after Harry during the summer holidays, but since Tonks still has 'two and a half years of practice' left, she obviously knows fewer people than Mr. Weasley does. Otherwise, she wouldn't have talked to him in that way.
Amos Tamm did not feign ignorance, for he too wanted to glean from Tonks what progress the Order of the Phoenix had made.
"If you mean Black,"
Slightly leaning forward and lowering his voice, the sinister Amos Tamm said, "I already know that he might cause some trouble... However, I don't think the Ministry of Magic has much to worry about, after all--"
Amos Tamm pointed towards the window, looking in the direction of Hogwarts, imitating Harry's lively expression when he mentioned Dumbledore.
"Our headmaster isn't a pushover, believe me!"
"Oh, you already know that?"
Tonks, who was preparing to share 'secrets', seemed a little disappointed. She muttered a few things, but it didn't seem too surprising to her either. Clearly, she had a certain understanding of the Magic Ministry, which is as leaky as a sieve.
“-That's not necessarily the case, Amos Tamm,” Tonks fiddled with her hair again, her expression slightly sulky and unyielding, “Dumbledore does have his moments of poor judgment, doesn't he? Otherwise, he wouldn't have allowed Black to be the secret keeper for the Potters!”
Silence... Quiet...
Only after a long silence did Tonks, who had not received an answer, look at Amos in confusion. To her surprise, she saw a handsome, shocked and amazed face.
"Oh, you don't know this!" Tonks got excited at once. "Haven't you heard about it?"
Amos Tamm slowly closed his mouth, hesitating as he nodded.
Shua!
Tonks' golden hair suddenly turned pink, her pale heart-shaped cheeks flushed with a hint of red, her bright eyes fixated on Amos Tamm's dark eyes.
"Oh, of course I do! This is top-secret stuff. Even in the Ministry of Magic, only a few high-ranking officials know about it. Of course, as members of the Order, we often come across secrets known to few, but, Amos, I can't tell anyone outside; it's top-secret--"
"Since it's like that..."
"But aren't you just a regular wizard?" Tonks leaned in, "You have the Merlin's Star. By the way, that's really impressive, Amos. Besides dying in service to the Ministry, I can hardly see myself ever getting one of those... You got it for Dumbledore because of your role in solving Slytherin's loathsome chamber, and I'm sure he trusted you because of it!"
Maybe... That's what Amos was thinking, but as the words were on the tip of his tongue, they turned into -- Yes, I am Dumbledore's most trusted person!
"Since it's like that!"
Tonks glanced outside the door, making sure no one was eavesdropping, and excitedly said, "I can tell you anyway. Dumbledore will tell you eventually!"
Maybe... Amos thought to himself again.
"... This thing is complicated, Amos. I have important things to attend to and cannot explain it to you in detail. It's about that boy's parents... They are friends of Black's family, and in the past, the Dark Lord was chasing them all. To protect the safety of Mr. and Mrs. Potter and their son, Dumbledore proposed using the Unforgivable Cursed used by the Secret-Keeper Charm to hide them in place, but Mr. and Mrs. Potter disagreed. They believed Black was more trustworthy..."
Amos Tamm's expression subtly changed,
"So, after Black became the Secret-Keeper for Mr. and Mrs. Potter, he betrayed them and joined the Dark Lord?"
"Things are like that, Amos!"
Tonks said solemnly,
"As everyone knows, the Dark Lord found Mr. and Mrs. Potter and killed them, and just when he was about to kill young Potter, for some unknown reason, his powers failed, and he was seriously injured, fleeing in disarray... Some people even believe he simply died."
"In short, that despicable Black lost everything overnight. He couldn't believe that the Dark Lord would be defeated by a baby. As soon as the news spread, he immediately ran to the Potter family's house to check on the situation. When he discovered the truth, he chose to run away instead of facing trial..."
But Black, who was a close friend of the Potter family, was pursued by a guy named Remus Lupin, who wanted to seek revenge for the Potters. Remus cornered Black in a Muggle street and tried to avenge the Potters... Oh, that was a hero, but unfortunately, his skills weren't enough compared to Black's. He was killed by Black using a powerful Dark spell... The hero's mother only got her son's finger and a Merlin's Star of Level One earned at the cost of his life. As for Black..."
Bing-bing-bing--
Roastma, the woman who had checked the goods, pushed open the door of her own bar. A few local residents were controlling magic to float one cask after another of mature beer into the shop. They followed the owner, taking these aged brews to be stored in the cellar.
Tonks was not a dim-witted girl. She mentioned these things to Amos Tamm not just because they had shared the same cell, but she genuinely believed that with a Merlin's Star II personally recommended by the Minister of Magic, Amos was 'one of us'. When she saw a stranger entering the private conversation space, she closed her mouth out of caution.
Potter family, Remus Lupin...
While Tonks was on guard against those villagers, Amos Tamm furrowed his eyebrows, his expression becoming indecipherable.
'He killed my three friends... Very good friends. I must kill him by hand.'
Remus Lupin's words suddenly jumped into Amos Tamm's mind, causing his breathing to slightly quicken.
So that's the truth... Amos Tamm lightly tapped his fingers on the table, a realization dawning in his mind. No wonder Remus Lupin harbored such deep-seated hatred for Black and even asked Amos to hand him over personally if Black was ever caught...
So it seems that if it hadn't been for Black's betrayal, Harry's parents, the Potters, might not have had to sacrifice themselves... Although Voldemort was the one who killed them, in a sense, Harry's true enemy is actually Black.
Harry definitely didn't know about this.
Amos Tamm's mind flashed with the question, but immediately he came up with the answer.
Given his knowledge of Harry Potter, Amos Tamm realized that if Harry knew his parents had been betrayed by their closest friend and killed, he might not even go back to school and would likely run out to 'kill' Black.
Indeed, he deserves to die...
Amos Tamm's light purple eyes showed more depth...
Dumbledore had always been the undying banner for the wizards fighting against Voldemort, but Mrs. and Mr. Potter would rather have Black as their Secret Keeper than Dumbledore. It's easy to imagine how much trust they had in this friend, and thus, how much regret they must have felt when they fell!
